The story behind this design
The map is drawn as a paper road atlas, creased and held open with both hands, which is the funniest possible object to bring into orbit and the reason the drawing works. The astronaut's head is tilted down at it rather than out at the viewer, so the figure is entirely absorbed. Fold lines across the paper are the most carefully rendered detail in the whole piece.
