Marigolds are almost solid colour in life, so the challenge is making them read as flowers and not as orange discs. Here each head is built from many short strokes at varied saturation, with the deepest rust pushed into the centre and the palest gold at the ruffled rim. Foliage is kept sparse and dark, so the blooms sit forward. On the darker bag colours the bouquet glows; on beige and white it reads closer to a botanical study.
