The story behind this design
This is a mushroom drawn as if lit from below, which is why the gills carry most of the detail and the cap is left nearly dark. The stem fades out before it reaches the ground, so the specimen seems to hover rather than grow. Black was the only colourway that made sense: the design depends on the shirt supplying the night, and on any lighter ground the whole effect collapses.
