The story behind this design
The swirls are built from long curved bands of color laid over each other, the way a current folds foam back on itself, and the palette moves from pale aqua through cornflower to a deep navy at the edges. There is no shoreline and no horizon in the drawing, so the pattern never settles into a picture of the sea. Held in the hand it reads as marbled paper that happens to be the color of water.
