The story behind this design
The peacock is drawn side-on with its tail folded rather than fanned, so the eye-feathers stack into a long ornamental column instead of a wheel. Around it, stylised blooms and curling stems fill the ground in the manner of a nineteenth-century damask, laid down in teal, ink blue and antique gold. The overall effect is closer to a piece of decorative bookbinding than a wildlife illustration.
