The story behind this design
Poppies are usually painted in full sun on a pale field. This design does the opposite and sets them on a near-black ground, so the scarlet petals glow and the leaves almost disappear into the shadow behind them. The drawing is loose, with visible brush edges rather than clean outlines, which gives the pattern the look of a faded furnishing fabric rather than a fresh print.
