The story behind this design
Each tree in this painting is given one color and allowed to keep it: a red canopy beside an orange beside a violet, trunks left in bare grey wash so the color sits only in the leaves. Pigment was dropped into wet paper, so the canopies spread into soft blots with hard rims. Read close it is a row of individual trees; read from across the room it is a rainbow standing up.
