The story behind this design
The wave shape here is the one from old surf prints, a curling crest drawn in a single sweep with a flat face below it. Stacking those crests in spectrum order turns a seascape into something closer to a pattern, and the repetition is what makes it work on a long, narrow surface. The white of the foam is used as the spray, so the lightest parts of the design are the parts with no ink at all.
