The story behind this design
Buffalo check earns its name from a nineteenth-century American mill pattern, and its strength has always been scale: the squares are big enough that you read the grid before you read the color. Knitting it rather than weaving it softens every edge, so the lines blur slightly where the two colors meet and the plaid loses the hard graphic snap of a flannel shirt. That blur is the reason it works on a sweater at all.
