The story behind this design
A matte hardcover is an unusual surface for a winter scene, because matte flattens exactly the sparkle a snowy illustration usually leans on. The design compensates with contrast rather than shine: Rudolph is set dark against pale drifts, and the winter wonderland behind him is built from layered silhouettes instead of fine glitter detail that the finish would swallow.
