The story behind this design

Cropping Santa to head and shoulders meant the beard had to do the compositional work, so it is drawn wide and loosely textured, with the lettering curved to follow its lower edge. Keeping the eyes small and the cheeks high gives the face warmth without tipping into caricature. On black the white beard becomes the brightest thing on the shirt.
