The story behind this design
The skulls here are drawn in the manner of a nineteenth-century field sketch rather than a horror graphic, with fine cross-hatched shading and no exaggeration of the sockets. Sepia sprigs, seed heads and small leaves fill every gap between them, so the repeat reads as a herbarium page first and a memento mori second. Keeping the ground a warm cream rather than black is what lets the design sit in an everyday wardrobe.
