The story behind this design
At two inches square there is no room for detail that does not earn its place, so the skull is reduced to its strongest lines and allowed to fill the tile edge to edge. White porcelain gives the drawing a hard, bright ground that paper cannot, and the gloss of the fired surface is what makes a small dark image read as ornament rather than as a warning.
