The story behind this design
The composition is built on a vertical axis, with the skull centred and the wings opening away from it so the whole thing reads as a crest. Roses are drawn open rather than in bud, and their petals overlap the wing feathers, which softens what would otherwise be a hard, heraldic shape. Maroon was chosen alongside black because the rose ink shifts warmer against it, and the design stops looking like a band shirt and starts looking like an illustration.
