The story behind this design
Maroon is an unusual choice for foliage, which is normally drawn green or turned to autumn orange. Here the leaves are pushed all the way to deep wine, with gold veining picking out the structure, so the pattern reads closer to a damask textile than to a botanical study. On the Black bottle the gold does most of the work; on White the maroon comes forward instead.
