The story behind this design
The waves are drawn as flat stacked bands rather than as water with depth, closer to a woodblock print than to a seascape. Each band takes a different color, so the design works as a stripe from across a room and only becomes waves up close. Warm oranges and pinks sit in the upper bands and the blues are kept low, which is the reverse of how a real horizon would fall.
