The story behind this design

A desk mat does something a mouse pad cannot: it draws a boundary. Everything inside it reads as the workspace and everything outside it reads as the desk, which is a surprisingly effective piece of psychology for anyone working from a table that is also used for other things. The color here is doing that job rather than trying to be a picture.
