The story behind this design
Sunflowers are usually drawn facing forward, but half of these are turned away, showing the green back of the head, which is how a real bunch sits once it is cut. The pumpkins are kept small and low so they read as companions rather than as a competing subject. Yellow is warmed with ochre at the petal tips so the flowers land in September rather than in high summer.
