The story behind this design
The sun sits just above the waterline, so the whole image is organized around one bright point and the column of reflected light dropping from it. Color runs from a hot gold at the center out to bruised purple at the edges, and the sand in the foreground is left almost colorless by comparison. It is painted looking straight into the light, which is why nothing in the foreground has much detail.
