The story behind this design
A dark floral only works if the flowers are properly painted, because on a black ground anything flat disappears. These roses are built up from burgundy through plum to a dusty pink at the outer petals, with the leaves nearly black and the background blacker still, so the blooms seem lit from somewhere off the case. It is the palette of a seventeenth-century Dutch still life, which is a long way from the usual phone-case floral.
