The story behind this design
Watercolor was the right medium for a curtain because both things do the same job: they let light through. The trees are painted in washes of amber, rust and ochre with the paper showing between the strokes, so when daylight comes through the panel the color lifts rather than flattens. The canopy is placed high on the drop, which keeps the busy part of the picture above eye level.
