The story behind this design
The joke only works if the typography commits, so the lettering is drawn in the manner of a 1980s video-nasty title card: heavy, slightly warped, with drips that start thick and taper. The mathematical expression itself is set cleanly, in a textbook serif, which is where the tension comes from. Bone white and a single arterial red are the only colors on the black ground.
