The fish are drawn in profile in hot orange, turquoise and yellow, overlapping as a loose shoal rather than lining up in rows. Overlapping them was the decision that keeps the pattern moving on a short garment, where a tidy grid would look like upholstery. The mood is tropical and a bit comic.
