The story behind this design
Old maps are mostly empty space, and that is what this design borrows: long stretches of parchment tone broken by a coastline, a compass rose or a run of engraved place names. Keeping the density low means the pattern never turns into visual noise at duffel scale, which is the usual failure of map prints. The sepia and faded-ink palette does the rest of the work of making it look found rather than printed.
