The story behind this design
A watercolor map has to choose between accuracy and atmosphere, and this one chooses atmosphere: the state borders are honored but the washes are allowed to cross them slightly, the way paint behaves on wet paper. No two states share a color, which turns the map into a quilt. On acrylic the washes gain depth, because light passes into the panel before it reflects back out.
