The Nordic star is a knitting motif before it is a drawing: it has eight arms because that is what a stranded colorwork grid can produce cleanly, not because snow does. Rendering it in oatmeal, clay and soft charcoal rather than the usual red and white moves it away from Christmas and toward something wearable in October or March. The grid structure is still visible if you look closely.
