The story behind this design
The elephant is drawn in outline and then filled entirely with mandala work — rings of petals, dotted bands and teardrop shapes that follow the curve of the body. A larger mandala sits behind it like a sun. Indigo and turquoise do most of the work, lifted by saffron in the smaller details. Backlit through sheer fabric the fine pattern reads almost like pierced metalwork.
