The story behind this design
Shells are usually drawn as still-life objects, shaded and sitting on sand. Here they are reduced to outline, which does two things: it keeps the shirt light enough for hot weather, and it lets the same artwork work on a heathered grey as on a stonewashed green. The shapes are varied on purpose so the eye keeps finding a shell it has not seen yet, the way a real beachcombing haul looks tipped out on a towel.
