The story behind this design

Circles of four or five sizes float over one another in overlapping washes of blue, some with a hard edge and some bleeding out, so the surface reads as water seen from above rather than as polka dots. Nothing lines up on a grid. That single decision is what makes the pattern feel like the 1970s rather than a nursery print.
