The story behind this design
Tapestry gets its depth from shading in thread rather than in ink, so this drawing is built the same way: each rose is worked up through four or five closely related blush tones instead of being shaded smoothly. Massing them into a heart without an outline means the shape is read from the negative space around it, which is why the cream ground is left generous at the corners. The result sits closer to a needlework panel than to a printed cushion.
