The story behind this design
Weaving cannot render a smooth curve, and this design makes a feature of that limit instead of hiding it. The rose petals break into small blocks at their edges, which reads as embroidery rather than as a low-resolution image, and the charcoal ground gives those blocks enough contrast to be legible. Terracotta was the right choice for the flowers because it holds its warmth against so dark a background.
