Two patterns that should fight are made to share a surface here: a hard checkerboard grid underneath and loose yellow flower heads scattered over the top. The checks are kept close in value so they read as texture rather than as stripes, which leaves the yellow free to do all the shouting. The flowers ignore the grid entirely, crossing squares wherever they land.
