The pieces genuinely interlock: every tab has a matching blank, so the eye can follow one row across the bag without hitting a join that does not work. Alternating the fills black and white turns the grid into a checkerboard at a distance and back into puzzle pieces close up, which is the whole point of the pattern. Nothing is outlined, so the two tones do all the drawing themselves.
