The story behind this design

Puffins are usually drawn as a joke - the beak does most of the work - so this one was drawn straight instead, with the plumage worked out in fine line rather than blocked in. Heather Navy was chosen as the second colourway because the bird's white front needs a dark ground to read, and on white the drawing has to carry itself entirely on line weight. The stance is upright and slightly comic without being made so.
