The story behind this design

A hummingbird is nearly always drawn hovering, and the interesting part is the stillness rather than the speed: here the wings are blurred into two soft shapes while the head and beak stay sharp, which is how the eye actually sees one. The flowers it feeds from are given long throats, so the beak has somewhere to be. Lemon yellow does the lifting in the palette, kept to one or two blooms so it stays a highlight.
