The story behind this design
The swirl was drawn as a single continuous motion, so the eye follows one current from the top of the mat to the bottom instead of stopping at a repeated tile. Violet and magenta are pushed against a near-black blue to give the sense of depth you get looking at a long-exposure photograph of space. Fine specks of light are scattered through the darker areas so the surface still has texture where the color drops away.
