The story behind this design
Interlocking cogs of wildly different diameters fill this mat, drawn as flat line work with hatched shading rather than rendered metal. Because the artist varied the tooth count and let some wheels run off the edge of the mat, the mechanism reads as a fragment of something much larger. Keeping strictly to black, white and grey gives it an engraved, technical-manual quality that sits well under dark peripherals.
