The story behind this design
Each cat on this cover is banded like a rainbow rather than colored as a real coat, so a single animal might run red at the shoulder through to violet at the tail. They are drawn as smooth, boneless shapes, loafing, stretching, sitting upright with the tail wrapped round the feet, and outlined in a soft charcoal that keeps the stripes from bleeding into each other. The background stays a plain warm white, which is the only thing holding all that color together.
