The story behind this design

The cat is drawn mid-ride, crouched low with its tail out for balance, which is what keeps the joke in the pose rather than in the caption. Behind it a banded sun arc climbs in orange, coral and mustard, a 1970s surf-decal device that gives the design its depth without a horizon line. The wave is reduced to two curling shapes under the board, and the whole mark is printed with a light grain so it reads as an old iron-on.
