The story behind this design
This drawing follows the conventions of a nineteenth-century herbal plate rather than a modern kitchen print: one specimen, centered, with nothing behind it. The gray-green of sage is difficult to print convincingly because it sits so close to neutral, so the leaf veins were drawn a full tone darker to give the eye something to hold. The small purple flowering tip is the only saturated color on the whole towel.
