The story behind this design
Santa is drawn seated and at rest rather than mid-delivery, which is unusual for the subject and is where the cozy register of this one comes from. The hat flops forward, the beard is given soft rounded strokes instead of spikes, and the red is a deep brick rather than a postbox scarlet. On a red garment the figure reads through outline alone, which is why the linework was kept heavy.
