Printed on black alone, the waveform loses its coastal reading and becomes purely a signal: a pale line on a dark ground with nothing else in the frame. That restraint is the reason for having a second version of the design rather than simply adding colours to the first. The graphic ends up closer to an oscilloscope trace than to a seascape.
