The story behind this design
Lemons are drawn whole and halved in the same pattern, so the cut fruit gives the repeat its bursts of pale yellow against the deeper rind. Leaves are used sparingly, mostly to break up runs where two lemons would otherwise touch. Because this is an all-over print, the drawing had to work upside down as well as the right way up, which is why no lemon sits on a stem.
