The story behind this design
The ravens in this composition are drawn mid-landing rather than perched, wings still half open, which gives the square a diagonal pull from one corner to the other. The witch is smaller here than in the other drawings of the range, set back so the birds carry the frame. Heavy cross-hatching in the lower half weights the design toward the bottom, the way a woodcut printer would have balanced a small block.
