What Is Juneteenth?

Juneteenth — celebrated on June 19th — marks the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, finally received word that they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. It is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States, and since 2021 it has been recognized as a federal holiday. Juneteenth is a day of reflection, joy, community, and cultural pride.
