The plaid was drawn from the colours of a hedgerow in late October, where rust sits beside gold and cream turns up only where the light breaks through. Rather than a symmetrical tartan, the bands are deliberately uneven, so the eye keeps moving across the cloth. The thin dark crossing lines were added last, to give the pattern the crispness a printed weave can otherwise lose.
