The story behind this design

A candy cane is almost all stripe, so the illustration exaggerates the curve of the hook until it becomes the shape of the piece rather than a detail of it. The red is laid down in two weights to suggest the gloss of boiled sugar without resorting to a highlight. On a white body the cane appears to float, which is why no background was drawn.
