The story behind this design
This gourd is drawn as a real vegetable first and a lantern second: the ribs are uneven, the stem is bent and the shell has the bruises a pumpkin picks up in a field. Light comes out of the carved cuts in a hard wedge rather than a soft glow, which is what happens when a real candle sits low inside. The background is left almost empty so the shape does all the work at flag scale.
