Some bulbs are drawn whole with their papery skins intact, others cut clean through to show the concentric rings inside. The story behind this design
Onions are usually drawn whole, which wastes the best thing about them. This study cuts several of them open so the concentric rings become the pattern, and leaves the papery outer skins translucent enough that the layers show through. The palette runs from deep magenta through to bone white with only a little green at the shoots, which keeps a vegetable print from tipping into looking like a floral one.
