The story behind this design
A mandala is built from repetition around a centre, and putting one on a shoe means the centre lands somewhere on the side rather than facing the viewer. The drawing works around that by repeating the motif at several scales so a full figure always shows. Gold on navy is the oldest contrast in decorative pattern and it survives being shrunk.
